Training at Sandy Point 2/20/11

Training at Sandy Point 2/20/11

Training Ride with Sarah, her daughter, and Michelle. I got to ride Sarah's gelding, Helo, who is awesome! Very well-behaved and a whole lot of fun. We do need to work on his fear of water and mud but that should come pretty easy. Sarah's daughter did very well on Aleah; it was a very long day and she got pretty tired at the end but almost made it the whole way. Fun times all around!

Been riding with Sarah Seasholls, helping to get her horses ready for the No Frills LD in April. I have been working with her little mare, Aaliyah, who she got as a steal for $500 from a lesson barn. We believe she's at least half-arab (if not full), and while small she is very mighty! She's learning how to deal with things like mud and water very quickly, and is very happy and willing under saddle. She does have a little feistiness to her (she is a mare after all), but nothing out of line. We're trying to test her and see if she'll be a good junior horse for Sarah's daughter.

Sarah has been riding her Thoroughbred mare Tess, while we're training. In less than a month, she'll switch to ride her Arab gelding Helo and plans to take him on the LD as well. Helo was over-reaching and tore up his heels a bit so he's been on rest while he heals up. We plan on going in glue-on boots, as long as the horses take to them well. Can't wait to be back at maincamp with everyone again!

Finished 10th, sponsoring Forrest Green on Nino. Race went well, horses were incredibly strong until last loop (would have rather run them slower but was difficult to control them out front). Garmin report is only half complete; device started getting cranky on me and was rubbing a sore on my arm.

Riding Sonata, finished 2nd by passing a lot of riders on trail who got lost but was pulled at vet (metabolic). Couldn't get her heart rate down, hung for over an hour. Found out later the horse requires electrolytes administered just before the finish.
